# Upgrade a Data Plane

Keep your data planes in sync with your control plane to maintain compatibility and access new features. This page explains version compatibility and upgrade methods.

## Version compatibility

Starting with Domino 6.1, control planes and data planes are [compatible](/cloud/admin/architecture-and-deployment/kubernetes-compatibility#compatibility-matrix) across two regular releases.

A control plane is compatible with the current and one past regular release of the data plane. For instance, control plane `6.2.x` will be compatible with data planes `6.2.x` and `6.1.x`.

<Warning>
  The control plane must always be upgraded before the data plane. Running a data plane version newer than the control plane is not supported.
</Warning>

## Upgrade data planes

Data plane upgrades can be performed using two methods: UI-based upgrades or manual upgrades.

### Upgrade from the UI

You can use the Domino UI to upgrade data planes:

1. To get started, go to the admin portal, then click **Manage resources** > **Data Planes**.

2. Identify the data plane that needs an upgrade by looking for a status message indicating that the "Data Plane is running an older version" or "Data Plane is running a different version".

3. Click the three vertical dots next to your selected data plane.

4. Select **Upgrade** from the dropdown menu. If the upgrade option is greyed out, you’ll need to upgrade the Data Plane manually instead.

### Upgrade manually

If UI-based upgrades are not available, you’ll need to manually upgrade the Data Plane. Should this situation arise, contact the [Domino Support](mailto:support@dominodatalab.com) team for help with the upgrade procedure.
