# Project Layouts

> Pin the Project pages and Extensions your team uses most into the Project sidebar with named, shareable navigation Layouts.

A Project Layout is a named, ordered set of pinned Project pages and [Extensions](https://docs.domino.ai/cloud/platform-capabilities/features/extensions/create-manage-extensions.md) that shapes the Project sidebar. The standard sidebar shows every page and Extension to everyone, so the items a team uses daily sit among many it never opens. A Layout pins the pages that matter for one kind of work and applies to any number of Projects. Build a "Clinical trials" Layout once, apply it to every clinical trial Project, and edit it in one place.

Layouts change what's prominent, not what's permitted. Every page stays reachable through **View all** in the sidebar or by direct URL, and a Layout never grants access your role doesn't have.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Project Layouts are available in [Git-based Projects](https://docs.domino.ai/cloud/platform-capabilities/core-concepts/projects/git-based-projects.md) only. Other Projects keep the standard sidebar.

## Use Project Layouts

### Create or edit a Layout

Create and edit Layouts centrally from the **Layouts** tab on the Projects list, or from the sidebar of any Git-based Project. Either way, you pin, unpin, and reorder pages and Extensions, then name the Layout and choose whether it's public or private. New Layouts are public by default. A Layout you create from a Project's sidebar is applied to that Project for you right away.

The **Layouts** tab also lists every Layout you can see, with the number of Projects that use each as their default. Search and filter by owner or visibility there, and create, edit, duplicate, or delete Layouts.

### Switch Layouts

Pick a Layout from the Project sidebar, or **System default** to return to the standard sidebar. The sidebar previews it, and nothing changes until you apply.

If you're a Project owner or a Domino administrator, you choose whether to apply the Layout only for yourself or for everyone in the Project, which sets it as the Project default. Everyone else applies a Layout only for themselves, as a personal override.

## Important details

* **Resolution order.** Domino shows your personal override if you have one, then the Project default, then the System default (the standard sidebar).
* **Private Layouts are yours alone.** Only the owner can apply a private Layout; administrators can't apply someone else's. Only public Layouts can be Project defaults.
* **Setting or clearing a Project default clears every member's personal override** on that Project. Members see the default until they choose a Layout again.
* **Edits reach everyone using the Layout**, through a Project default or a personal override. While you edit a public Layout, Domino shows how many Projects use it as their default.
* **You can edit and delete only Layouts you own**, unless you're an administrator. **Duplicate** creates a copy you own of any Layout you can see, with the same visibility, and leaves the original unchanged.
* **Copying a Project copies its default Layout by reference**, not personal overrides. Later edits to the Layout reach both Projects.
* **Your deployment can cap how many Layouts each user owns.** Users at the limit keep their Layouts but can't create or duplicate more. To set the limit, ask Domino Support.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting a Layout clears every Project default and personal override that points to it. Changing a Layout from public to private clears its Project defaults, and those Projects fall back to the System default. Domino shows how many Projects are affected before you confirm.

The [Audit Trail](https://docs.domino.ai/cloud/platform-capabilities/features/governance/audit-trail) records every Layout change. Event names are in the [Audit Trail Data glossary](https://docs.domino.ai/cloud/platform-capabilities/features/governance/audit-trail/audit-trail-glossary.md#project-layouts).
