- Datasets use Dataset roles: the Dataset owner grants roles (Reader, Editor, Owner) to users and organizations, and the role decides who can view, edit, or manage the Dataset. Datasets originate inside a Project but can then be shared with any Project or user in Domino.
- NetApp Volumes use role-based permissions similar to Datasets: the Volume owner grants Reader, Editor, or Owner roles to users and organizations. NetApp Volumes differ from Datasets in that they are global from the start (they aren’t scoped to a single “home” Project), so their permissions travel with the Volume, not with any one Project.
- Data Sources use credentials and visibility: access depends on how the Data Source authenticates (individual credentials or a shared service account) and whether it’s shared with everyone or with specific users and organizations.
- External Data Volumes (EDVs) are administrator-controlled: an administrator decides which users and groups can access each volume.

Data in Domino is reusable across Projects, and each data method carries its own permissions: sharing a Project does not automatically expose its data. The four data methods use related but distinct access models:
