VSCode error: “Failed to get latest version — getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND api.github.com”

When you run VSCode (code-server) in a closed or air-gapped environment, you may see error messages in your logs. These errors are benign — the Domino Standard Environment (DSE) doesn’t rely on internet resources to function.

Failed to get latest version

The error Failed to get latest version {"error":"getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND api.github.com"} occurs because code-server attempts to update itself on startup. You can see the relevant code in code-server/update.ts. Apply the following network-related settings to suppress these update attempts.

Apply the settings

  1. Open $DOMINO_WORKING_DIR/.vscode/User/settings.json in your editor.
  2. Add or merge the following configuration into the file:
  3. Save the file and restart VSCode.
Note: This workaround has not been verified in a fully air-gapped environment. Results may vary.

Unknown IP addresses in logs

The IP addresses 142.250.179.176 and 216.58.214.16 appear in the logs because code-server tries to update the extensions that ship with the DSE. This behavior originates from the downloadInstallableExtension function in code-server.
